A Marriage That Feels Unsafe

Unnamed Fear
A disturbing domestic life
Audrey experiences Nevile as outwardly pleasant but senses something threatening beneath his manners. Because she cannot identify the cause, she begins to wonder whether the fear comes from herself.
The hidden nature of the danger makes her doubt her own judgement. She has no clear event to point to, only fragments of words, looks, and unease.
An escape that fails to settle her
Audrey leaves Nevile for Adrian, but Adrian dies before they can build a life together. Even after her divorce, the fear does not disappear.
The False Divorce Story

Silence and Gratitude
A protected reputation
Nevile arranges matters so Audrey can divorce him without the truth about Adrian becoming public. Audrey accepts his kindness, and outsiders conclude that Nevile was the injured husband.
She refuses the allowance he offers, preserving her independence despite limited means. Gratitude complicates her ability to set boundaries with the man she fears.
Fear returned to the household
When Nevile proposes the reunion, Audrey cannot bring herself to refuse. The old imbalance draws her back into his orbit.
The House of Tension

A Composed Appearance
Fear held in check
Audrey behaves with exceptional courtesy toward Kay and Nevile. Her calm face conceals an intense inner alarm that Mary and Thomas sense but cannot interpret.
Social composure protects her from being questioned, but it also makes the danger harder to name. Others see reserve where she is experiencing paralysis.
A familiar threat
Nevile’s renewed attention intensifies the old dread. Audrey feels that something terrible is approaching without knowing what action might prevent it.
An Arrest That Feels Like Safety

The Second Accusation
Evidence against her
Battle presents clues that make Audrey appear to have killed Lady Tressilian. Audrey is exhausted enough to accept the accusation rather than defend herself with energy.
Her response is misread as an admission. In fact, she feels relief that Nevile’s feared plan has finally become visible and that she is being taken away from him.
A temporary refuge
The arrest removes her from the household’s pressure. Battle recognizes the terror beneath her composure and uses the apparent case to protect her while testing his theory.
Safety and Renewal

Fear Begins to Lift
The truth is spoken
Audrey tells Battle how long she has feared Nevile and how she mistook that fear for madness. The explanation restores her trust in her own perception.
Battle connects her behaviour to an earlier case in which his daughter admitted to something she had not done. Audrey’s false appearance of guilt becomes understandable rather than incriminating.
A different future
MacWhirter’s intervention gives Audrey both physical safety and the possibility of affection without coercion. She chooses to travel with him and asks to marry before they leave.
